Mysterious Firsts #8- Phryne Fisher Mysteries

The Phryne Fisher mysteries are another series set in and around World War I, but with some interesting differences. Most of the books take place after the War, and are set in Australia. Phryne Fisher is an interesting character: a young woman who grew up desperately poor, but after the deaths of several distant male cousins became exeedingly wealthy when her father inherited the family titled (and the encumbered wealth). On the surface, a rich pampered flapper, she is also very smart, very principled (in her own way), and willing to work to set things right. Most of her mysteries arise in part from this last trait. Cocaine Blues is the first in the series, and begins with Phryne in England visiting with her family, and agreeing to travel to Australia to search for an English girl who has gone missing. And while the series for the most part is fun and light, it doesn't shy away from serious subjects. This series should be read in order, to appreciate the developing relationships between the various characters.
