The Beekeeper's Apprentice
By: Laurie R. King
Mary Russell is 15 when she runs into Sherlock Holmes, literally tripping over him as she wanders the Downs of Sussex England with her nose in a book. She has taken to wandering the Downs to escape her aunt’s oppressive presence, and in Sherlock Holmes she finds a mentor, a friend, and a sanctuary. Holmes teaches her all he knows about detection, and ultimately accepts her assistance on a variety of cases, including the kidnapping of an American Senator’s daughter. During this case, the pair comes to realize there is a master criminal involved: one whose ultimate target is Holmes himself. This is a great book, one that I reread regularly when I want to revisit the time and place peopled by the characters Ms. King so skillfully bring to life. The partnership of Holmes and Russell continues on in subsequent novels, all of them equally enjoyable.
