Clara and Mr. Tiffany
Susan Vreeland
This is a work of fiction based on facts taken from some recently discovered letters written by Clara Driscoll. Ms. Driscoll was the head of the women’s design department at Tiffany and Co, making the now famous leaded glass lamps. The book deals with the problems women faced in the workplace. They were not allowed to be married; they were paid less than their male counterparts and struggled with the finance department over the cost of making the lamps. It was interesting to learn the complicated process of making such beautiful works of art. We hear about some of the struggles in Ms. Driscoll’s personal life and the colorful people who made up her circle of friends.
The Chrysler museum in Norfolk has an exhibit of Tiffany lamps now through June and the author Susan Vreeland will give a talk about her book in May.
