Cleopatra: A Life
By: Stacy Schiff
This book, by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff, came out with a lot of fanfare in November and has received mixed reviews. After orienting myself to the time period and remembering the many important historical figures and writers, I began to enjoy the book after a slow beginning. Using all available texts which refer to Cleopatra, the author was able to paint a detailed picture of life in ancient Alexandria. Much of Cleopatra herself remains ‘probable’ as she is recorded by historians (all male) primarily in her relationships and dealings with other rulers (also male). Here she is presented as an intelligent, powerful, and wealthy leader who ruled Egypt for 22 years using more than seductive charms to form military alliances and political deals for her country. Her lavish court productions are memorable (especially in the movies) and presented Egypt to the world as she manipulated and guided events and leaders. Not a light read, but an enjoyable visit to the days of a unique and remarkable woman of her times.
