Clever Jack Takes the Cake

Clever Jack Takes the Cake
By: Candace Fleming

This book is about a poor boy named Jack. He has been invited to the princess’s 10th birthday party, but poor Jack has no money for a gift. All he owns is a spinning wheel, quilt and an ax. But clever Jack comes up with a great idea. He trades his belongings for the necessary ingredients to make a cake for the princess. While on his way to the castle he is attacked by crows, confronted by a troll, enters a dark spooky forest, is entertained by a gypsy and her dancing bear, and tricked by the castle guard. When he reaches the princes he has no gift for her. All he has left is “A STORY” And the princess loves it.

Candace Fleming has created a unique story that would be enjoyed by many boys and girls.

Jack is the reason I like this book. He’s a clever boy that is determined to make a beautiful gift for the princess.
