The Forest of Hands and Teeth
By: Carrie Ryan
Mary dreams of the ocean. She knows it’s exists, even though she only has an old photograph to look at. Mary lives in a village protected by fences and the guidance of the Sisterhood. No one comes, and no one leaves. Surrounding the village is the Forest of Hands and Teeth and it is inhabited by the Unconsecrated, or the undead. One bite will transform you quickly. The Sisterhood give comfort and the Guardians protect the barriers to keep everyone safe, especially from breaches of the Unconsecrated, who never relent. Through a series of events, Mary is forced to live in the cathedral, with the Sisters, and starts to learn the truth about their protected lives and the world outside. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, Mary and her friends have no choice but to enter the Forest and struggle to stay alive. Here Mary learns more about the one she loves, and about what is really important. Will she ever get to see the ocean? Will she survive to tell their story?
This is a post-apocalyptic story, similar to “The Village” and "I Am Legend". This book was thrilling and intense, and I couldn't put it down! This is the first in a thrilling series.

I was recommended this book awhile back by a YA staffer and loved it! I didn't know it was part a series though, so I am now going to look for the sequel "The dead-tossed waves". Thanks!
