A Great & Terrible Beauty
By: Libba Bray
This book is a great read and keeps you interesting throughout the entire story. The book is set in 1895 in London. While this book may not seem like a fantasy/adventure book at first glance, both of these elements build as the story progresses. The main character’s name is Gemma Doyle. She is sent to a London boarding school after the mysterious death of her mother. Gemma is strong willed and does not have the typical female conformist attitude that most girls at her boarding school posses. She also has abilities that she must come to acknowledge and explore throughout the story. All of Bray’s characters are well developed and believable. She also does a great job intertwining Victorian/Gothic fiction with fantasy. Once you pick up this book, you’re going to be hooked. There are also 2 sequels to this book which are both great. So if you’re in the mood to get away from the real-world for a while, this book is perfect for you!
