I highly recommend Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, a fantasy with historical and mythological elements. It is the first in a trilogy that follows Phedre through her homeland of Terre D'Ange and far beyond it's borders. She is a courtesan with unique skills and unusual desires, but she is quickly drawn into a world of political intrigue. Underestimated by most, she becomes much more than a simple servant.

Carey creates a colorful and fascinating world, all the more appealing because of it's roots in our own past.
