Magic Tree House #2: The Knight at Dawn
By: Mary Pope Osborne

If you are a child looking to go on an adventure in history try reading "Magic Tree House #2: The Knight at Dawn" by Mary Pope Osborne. This juvenile series stars Jack and Annie, a brother and sister, who encounter a tree house that makes their wishes come true. It is a magical place in which they find a book with a picture and travel back in time. In this particular book Annie wishes to travel back in history to meet gallant knights and their magic tree house takes them to medieval times. The informative aspect of this book that parents would enjoy is that it teaches facts about this era such as the weight of a knight's armor and the purpose of a moat for castles. In "The Knight at Dawn" Jack is practical and factual while Annie is in-tuned with nature and experiencing adventures. Once the siblings arrive at their new destination they both venture into the castle where they are greeted with a feast of music, food, and enjoyment until castle guards capture them in the armory. The two children are then taken to the dungeon where their fate is unknown. The author is talented in her narrative skills in keeping the reader in suspense about whether Jack and Annie will make it home safely. Through the children's futuristic technology located in a flashlight they escape the castle guards and are taken safely back to the tree house by their heroic knight. Jack and Annie make it back home safely with many more adventures to come in this historically informative and exciting series for young children.
