Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook
By: Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain’s second foray into the underbelly of the restaurant industry offers up just as many snarky comments as his previous book, Kitchen Confidential with this entertaining undiluted love note. As I am a huge Top Chef fan and have watched Bourdain offer cutting criticism to many of the contestants, this book peeked my interest and did not disappoint. The written style is very similar to his inner monologues on No Reservations and the imagery he presents is just as lush and straightforward as the show. Bourdain does not mince his words but some of his tirades can take a toll on the reader if not used to his more “colorful” expressions. Despite some of his cockiness, he offers up a bit of humble pie on certain Kitchen Confidential stories with apologies to some famous cooks, permission to eat restaurant fish on Mondays, and admits that he would not be able to hack it through to the finals in Top Chef. And though I am not a particular fan of people who rage against others and their inadequacies, I would probably read anything Anthony Bourdain publishes in the future. As his ability to show the humor in his tales and within his own faults makes for an appetizing afternoon read.
