The Necklace From Antiquity to the Present
By: Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi
I recently read and re-read the book, The Necklace From Antiquity to the Present by Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi. This was an absolutely riveting non-fiction book. I have always loved to browse through the nicer jewelry stores. From the time I was a small child I loved to browse the jewelry stores at the mall. Did you know that even Neiman Marcus's fine jewelry associates are courteous and will let an average girl try on jewelry worth more than $100,000?
This book helped me learn so much about the origins of the necklace. I learned about Egyptian broad collars and pectorals, Greek necklaces made of gold acorns and coins, and later necklaces of fine gemstones. There are chokers, garlands, fringe, sautoirs, and lavallieres to name a few of the types.
I loved this book. The many pictures were amazing- I only wish I could hold and admire the real necklaces! In light of Elizabeth Taylor's recent passing and love affair with jewelry- I am glad to have read this one cover to cover. It's encouraged me to travel once again north to The Smithsonian's Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Gems and Minerals to admire the beauty our earth produces.
Enjoy!
