The Omnivores Dilemma and Fast Food Nation

The Omnivores Dilemma
By: Michael Pollan

Fast Food Nation
By: Eric Schlosser

In the last couple of months I’ve been reading two fascinating books about the food we eat – what it actually is (which is often not at all what it looks like), and how it is grown, modified, processed and marketed to the masses. The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan follows the journey from the birth of different food items to the final products that we see at the grocery store after the wheels of the food industry are through with them. Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser follows much the same journey but focuses on the fast food industry; its beginnings and history, its evolution, and the gigantic machine and bottomless pit that it has now become. Both authors have done their homework and back up their observations with scientific research and facts, but in a writing style that is accessible to the average reader and leaves any final judgments up to the reader. But this book recommendation comes with a warning: I have now changed to an organic and vegetarian diet!
