Once

Once
By: Morris Gleitzman

This is a young adult novel about a Polish Jewish boy named Felix who lived in a Catholic orphanage for nearly four years during WWII. He believes his parents sent him to the orphanage so their bookstore could be repaired. He runs away from the orphanage in search of his parents and along the way witnesses the horrible persecution of innocent people. He also recues a little girl named Zelda from her burning home and has the heavy burden of explaining that her parents were executed by Nazis soldiers. The horror of the Holocaust Felix experienced as a young boy is told through this excellent work of historical fiction.
