The Strain is a dark and fast paced thriller co-written by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan that gives a fresh take on a tired genre. If your idea of a good vampire book is Twilight or even the Sookie Stackhouse novels, then this is probably not the book for you. If you enjoy being kept on the edge of your seat and missing a few nights of sleep, then you're going to love this book. The Strain is book one in a trilogy about what happens when a vampiric plague is unleashed upon the world and the only thing standing between the human race and total annihilation is a rag tag group of survivors led by a doctor and an elderly holocaust survivor. The book reads like a movie and will leave you hungry for the next book in the series. I highly recommend reading it.

I loved this book so much that I too spent a couple of days reading it at every opportunity and late into the night racing ahead to finish it. However, I love the Twilight series too.(Judge me if you must!)Twilight is a Romance. The Strain is Horror. Not comparable.
