The Warmth of Other Suns
By: Isabel Wilkerson
The Warmth of Other Suns is a labor of love and respect by journalist/author Isabel Wilkerson. After years of collecting oral history interviews, Wilkerson shares the true story of the Great Migration, a long stretch of time where there was a mass migration of African Americans from the Southern states to the Midwest, East and West coast. The book follows three narrators as they tell what life was like for them as a child, why they each chose to move, what their journey was like, and how life was once they made it to their destinations. It is an eye-opening account of what the country was like in the 20th century, and how perseverance, desire and hope can take someone anywhere, and how just because you arrive somewhere new doesn't mean everything has changed. This is a book you need to read to learn the history of this country and its people.
