A Woman of Substance
By: Barbara Taylor Bradford
Never considering myself a historical novel reader or one who could ever get into what’s called “period” fiction, imagine my surprise when I picked up the hard bound copy of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s A Woman of Substance (all 755 pages worth) and found myself drawn into Emma’s story. What an intriguing journey commencing in 1904 where you meet Emma her father, mother and brothers. Experience what they mean to each other, how they handle the many struggles and hardships of living life in poverty, a life that leads her to taking a job as a maid for a wealthy family. See how she matures and manifests a strong will to succeed and her triumphant rise into the successful owner of a multimillion dollar enterprise. Along the way she develops friendships that last a life time and relationships that cause much heartache. A journey that takes nearly six decades to complete and then joy of joys, when the book ends you find out that it doesn’t really end. THERE ARE SEQUELS!!! And that’s a good thing because believe me you will want the story to go on. Why not embark on the journey; it is well worth the trip.
p.s. now in paperback, all 944 pages
